Barcelona: Fimoteca de Catalunya, in the heart of the Raval neighbourhood

The Filmoteca de Catalunya’s new centre opened nine months ago, in February. According to Esteve Riambau, it’s been a complete success. We visited the new facilities in the heart of the Raval and noted the constant development of a neighbourhood that is putting more and more public and private amenities at the service of the city. The Filmoteca is perfectly suited to the neighbourhood and gives it cultural life, while reaffirming the area’s genuinely Mediterranean character and the marks left by all the other cultures to be found there. Thanks to Esteve we discover how the Fimoteca is much more than a place for going to watch black-and-white subtitled films. It’s he who shows us this public amenity is a centre for research and investigation, with the right facilities and archives for that. The Film Library, for instance, has a collection that uses up over 1,000 square metres of space and contains 45,000 books, 1,500 historical titles, 138 specialist magazines, over 20,000 graphic archives, 8,000 films in video or DVD format and some 5,000 sound tracks in CD. In addition, the Film Library boasts 1,250 items in its collection of film equipment, some of which are permanently on display in the Delmiro de Caralt exhibition area.
